Spanish woman, 25, to be euthanized later today – her heartbreaking decision explained
A 25-year-old woman in Spain has drawn widespread attention after being granted legal permission to undergo euthanasia due to severe psychological suffering.
Noelia Castillo Ramos, from Barcelona, began seeking approval in 2024. After a long and complex legal process, her request was approved, making it a rare case centered primarily on mental health.
Her situation follows traumatic events. In 2022, while living in a supervised care facility, she reportedly experienced an assault. Later, she attempted suicide by jumping from a building, surviving but becoming paralyzed from the waist down.
Since then, she has been diagnosed with severe depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and borderline personality disorder. Medical experts described her condition as ongoing and unbearable psychological distress.
Euthanasia became legal in Spain in 2021 under strict rules, generally applying to patients with serious physical illnesses. Her case stands out because it focuses mainly on mental suffering rather than physical disease.
Although initially approved in 2024, the process was delayed after her father challenged the decision, questioning her ability to make a stable choice. However, in court, she firmly expressed her desire to proceed.
After reviewing expert evidence, the judge ruled in her favor. Her case has since sparked debate about ethics, personal autonomy, and how society responds to profound mental suffering.
